Hello everyone,
I have ran into an issue while I was changing my thermostat sensor and was hoping to get some advice. Today I pulled the carbs on my bike and while I had good access I figured I would change the temp sensor that is located right next to the thermostat. Unfortunately the top of the sensor broke off with very little pressure leaving me with just the part that threads into the head. I then tried to use a pipe extractor which made things worse and cracked the housing. I'm trying to decide where to go from here. I could get a new head but my bike is very low mileage and I think it would be a shame to get a well used one but is an option non the less. I would also consider pluging the hole that the sensor goes into if there was a viable way to do that. I would probably try to set up an inline sensor in that case or maybe just no temp gauge at all. Any advice would be much appreciated and thanks in advance. Also, my bike is a 96 600 f3.
I decided to go ahead and get a replacement head to put on for now. Maybe once I get the broken one off ill see if a machine shop can fix it. A warning to anyone who is considering replacing this sensor, mine was very brittle and broke with just a little bit of force from a small 1/4 ratchet. I wouldn't recommend trying to replace it.
If it’s an o ring then the sensor shouldn’t have been torqued much. I’m guessing you’re right that it’s some sort of sealant because someone feared a leak and so they’ve over torqued it.
