Broken swing arm plate.

I have a 98 600 f3 and I changed the rear tire, sprocket and chain the other day. I took it out for the second time today and I could feel that the chain had stretched a bit. So when I got home I got it up on the rear stand and the plate at the end of the swing arm on the chain side that the bolt goes through was broken in half. It was just barely holding on. I'm getting a new plate, but my question is what could have caused this? I'm hoping it's just a weak plate, but I wanted to ask before I stuck the new plate on. The chain was not over tightened, and the other plate looks fine. Anyone have any insight?

The chain slack was dead in the middle of the required range. And i measured the bolts when I reinstalled everything to make sure they were even.
Possibly some slack in the adjusting nuts allowed the axle to slam back and forth and pull the bolt to crack the plate. I always adjust mine and lightly set the nuts, tighten the axle completely, and snug the lock nut on the adjusting bolt.
had mine do that with an overtightened axle was lucky really as i was flying round cadwell park or it could of been jumping the mountain that caused it not sure but they are made of monkey metal
