Air box system epic fail!(PICS included) need help plz !!!!
i know this is crazy, but i don't want an airbox system..... the whole freakin system...i want universal air fliters from k&n instead, i've seen on the internet a couple of honda CBs aka hornets doing it and since the F3 has the same engine so why not!? but my bike seems to refuse the slightiest idea! and i don't know why

i want the universal k&n filters because i like to travel a lot and i wana keep my bike as simple as possible, because if the bike breaks down on the road in the middle of the desert(since i live in egypt) i can just easily reach wires, spark plugs, or easily reach things including easy service; i noticed that if i remove the airbox system i can easily reach a loooot of things in the bike.
my future plan is make this bike bullet proof (and naked)... atleast as much as i can, i like the idea of having a steel frame, makes it feel more durable. and i'll also make stuff like small custom rear lights, and custom PIAA headlights, no fairings, f4i gauge coz i don't trust old tech no more, sliders with a custom cage, custom springs to remove chair easily, and this "auto fan switch" so the sensor won't die on me anytime, .... stuff like that..... i already removed the fuel pump, been riding on gravity feed ever since! and im loving it (so the pump won't die on me when im in the middle of no where) cuz hehe that happened to me once
and i wont let happen again....ever....
so here's what i removed:
*the whole airbox system (including the hoses connecting to the head cylinder exhaust and all other hose connections
*all the hoses for the DAI (direct air intake) (the 2 small hoses on the front of the bike)
* air vent solenoid valve and it's cable including all the hoses attached to it
what i did instead:
* bought a meter of metal mesh, cut it vertically, and then folded 4 times, then covered the air funnels. (just a test to see how everything would go, so i wouldn't buy the k&n for no reason) {i knoooow hehe, i knowww its a bad idea, coz dust can go inside the engine and blablabla but its just a small little experiment...speaking of dust, we currently have a blasting sand storm! and i have asthma!
hehehe}
* i also sprayed my carbs all the way to the inside of the funnel and all, so i can clean it .... as you can see in the pics below there is a huge difference!
(don't scroll down nowww!!! you'll loose where i was typing to ya! lol)
what happened: (i thought it was going to be so good! i was even afraid to throttle until this happened hehe)
* bike performance is very bad
* throttle response sucks butt
* i can't rev... rpm just won't go up (max 6 or 4 sometimes hehe)
* top speed is like 60 miles to 80 miles
what experiments i did: (nothing worked, like i did nothing)
* kept the air vent solenoid valve with it's switch (on the side) with the hoses, but still don't work
* removed the air vent solenoid valve with it's switch and hoses.... but still didnt work....
* removed both the air vent solenoid valve and the speed sensor .... but didn't work, then i kept one and removed the other... the i removed the other and kept the other one.... hehehe... i tried everything, but all didnt work!
what's my final diagnose on this:
* there is something wrong with my ummm, where almost all the air is going... so it's NOT the solenoid valve, but IT IS the air funnel part!
* everytime i throttle or accelerate(atleast try), i can hear air sucking sounds coming from it....
so my final guess is, either: *too much air is going inside(which i don't think could be true..) or *too little air is going inside.....
i wonder if a universal K&N filter would fix this weird problem.....
p.s worst case scenario, ill put it back on, but i'm a fighter! and i'll do whatever it takes to get it done right! i really want the k&n filters instead
what i'm thinking of doing: (more experiments!)
* remove the metal mesh completely and test drive without anything at all, see how it goes.... (just a test, aint permanent)
* i don't know hehehe..... help
annnnnd here are the pics of everything!
(sorry if the pics are not inorder or stuff, my first thread ever
( i can email them to ya if you can't see them!)
annnnnnd one more thing, if you guys wana pin point something out to me, you can go ahead save the image or screen it then edit it with circles or arrows and then repost it to this thread! so you can make life easier for everyone lol

I'm no expert, so this might not even make sense. It seems to me the airbox is there to create the correct pressure going into the carbs. I would think that by removing the entire airbox and not replacing it with anything, you would have an air pressure issue. (sucking noise?). I won't make any suggestions because I am not an expert and would probably give bad advice. Good luck with it. The bike looks really cool. It would be great if you can get it going properly. Keep us posted.
i would do a search on the forum about " air mod" it show how to remove the air solenoid and reroute hoses. it looks like the hornets can do without the air box cause there are no side fairings,so it can get the air it needs.i think to remove the air box you would have to run some kind of vents or hose to the front of the bike. like the setup thats on the bike just make it more smaller.maybe hose from the front of the bike to each carb with mesh/filter
when i did my air mod it ran like crap cause i was getting to much air in and i didnt jet the carb for more fuel. so i just use some duck tape on the front of the air box vent so i can control how much air goes in. lot e z'er to adjust tape on the outside then air/fuel screw on the carb

alllllright! ekelman!!!!!!! and this guy!!!!!!!!!! awesome replies! just the thought of you guys replying gives me the a powerful boost to think harder!!! and i did!
so listen up:
i remembered something very important!
haha!
i had filter foams wrapped around each funnel and then i started it up and and started reving! ... it was soo good! i mean the revving/idling/rpm was so good that it cut all the foams hehe.... .... i was so happy and everything was fine..... and i experienced none of these sputtering problems or anything at all.... everything was cool
and then huge time passed away (which is the reason why i forgot to mention foam part) because i decided to clean my carbs with this spray product (pic below) which did hell of a great job but sadly i did it the wrong way
... i sprayed the carbs vigorously (and you guys seen how dirty it was) and and above all that.....my engine was off.... i didn't turn it on at all.... plus i manually with my fingers lifted the (carb piston vacuum aka that "black gate" which slides up for more air to get it) and sprayed inside and i even squeezed the throttle (while engine was off) to open up the "golden gate "which flips to let air/fuel mix get inside the engine and sprayed that too.......
offcourse, the engine wouldn't start after all that
silly me ..... but dont worry, no dust from the outside of the carbs went inside... anyways..... after like 3 hours ..... it started up (not to mention the number of times i tried in between)..... im guessing the sparks were like extremely wet ....
anyways, it started up....but offcourse i had all these problems that i mentioned in my first post.....even though i rode like 50 miles but same problem
do you guys think i ruined my spark plugs .....? .....
here's what i think i'll do tonight .....:
i'll remove the metal mesh, and spray again hehehe! but this time with the engine switched on! and hope to go this would clean my carbs and spark.....
if it doesn't .... i'll remove my sparks and check'em (i don't have the tools yet for that)

so i made a video last night on the problem, so you guys can hear it and see it yourself.
could it be my spark plugs? .... i'll go over a friends house tonight who was tools to pull out a spark plug and check them.... and i'll also buy some new ones.... see how that goes....

I'm not sure even where to begin on this.... the bike is running like garbage because the whole airbox is off!
When I pulled the plastics off of my F3 it ran like a turd since I removed the tube that runs down the side of the frame and into the front fairing.
So I did this:
F3 Ram Air Solenoid Elimination - Custom Fighters - Custom Streetfighter Motorcycle Forum
Now it runs great. Your problem is the fact that you do not have the tubes used to eliminate the solenoid since the ram air is off.
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but put the damn box back on.

unbelievable!!!! soaker?!?! aka fat head?!?!
are you serious! waw! what an honor man!!!!!!!!!! thank you for reply bikerbroooooo!!!!!!!! means a looooooooot! if there's any F3 custom king in this world it would be youuuuu!!!! you inspired me to buy this f3 and i'll be making a project out of it too!
and @ this guy, hehehhe!
the air box wouldn't fit on all 4 carbs hehehe! loved your post hahaha! throw a little bit of this and some of that hehehehehhe! love it!
alright alright! so! i finally bought a tool to remove my spark plugs, and i found a crime ..... seriously! why are all dealers the same?, i bought my bike from one of the "best" dealers in egypt, and he told me he just changed oil (which i changed again offcourse) and new set of ngk spark plugs ... and i find this...
3 different types and lengths of sparks including a ridium!!!! this is crazyyyy!!!
i had to listen to soaker and put the damn box on hahaha god! it took me like 3 hours to put the box back on! so uncool but hey! the bike works fine again...... but you're right though ... its all about this ram air solenoid!.... but i aint giving up! ill give it a rest but think about it again later on

The air valve is irrelevant because you have completely changed the intake system by removing the airbox. Stick the airbox back on with the original filter, don't forget the baffle plate either if you removed this from the airbox. Either connect the air valve system as it was or bypass it connecting the carb hoses directly to the front of the airbox as per HRC mods.
Now does it rev normally?
It may be possible to get it to run ok without an airbox but I'd bet you'll need to have completely different carb tune, different jets, needles, maybe slides too and this will either take you 5 years riding up and down the same bit of road or a few days with a good dyno operator which if your dealer is an example of Egyptian professionalism you'll struggle to find!
If I wanted a really simple bike I think I'd start with something easier like an old 80's air cooled twin or maybe a single. An F3 is just inside the era when sports bikes got small and emission regs were coming in. I reckon it might even be easier with an Fi bike to do what you want. At least dyno setup will be cheaper.
