the '91-'96 uses a 530 chain, therefore it would be a different pitch than the 97-98, which uses a 525 chain. Not sure about mixing and matching sprockets and chains of different pitches (520, 525, 530)

Otherwise, they are the same sprockets (bolt spacing and diameter) on all of the F3's.

From what I can tell, yep, except for the pitch, the sprockets are the same for all F3s

people run the 520 conv its cheaper and saves weight also but may not last as long

5 is the pitch the 20 or 25 is the width.
The kit will fit fine but it's more for racing.

Just trying to add a little clarification here on chains. As broadie says, pitch is the spacing between the rollers and the 5 refers to that. So 530, 525, and 520 have the same Pitch. The roller width, or distance from one side plate to another is different, the smaller the last two numbers, the narrower the chain. 520 sets generally have sprockets made of an aluminum alloy, which is softer and lighter. Yes there is less mass to move, but it's not going to last as long. There is not much of a gain by going from a 525 with steel sprockets to a 520 with aluminum sprockets (at least not as much as you would if you were going from a 530 with steel sprockets to a 520 setup.

Here's a nice explanation of chain basics I came across.

Chain and Spockets

Thanks for clarifying that. I was mixing pitch and width in my posts.

Pretty good price here.. It's OEM mind ya.. Can't go wrong. From what I can tell it's the engine sprocket, rear sprocket, and complete chain for about $130.. #27 on list http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...1998&fveh=3047

Default Sorry to jump on !

Sorry to jump on the end of the thread! But I'm a bit confused about my chain and sprocket..

Originally I had a 14 toothed sprocket at the front and a 43 at the rear.

Ordered a new set ( asked the assistant if it was the correct one on which he said yes to ) however, now I have them, the front is 16 toothed - doesn't fit to the transmission though and the rear is 44.

Would the performance of the bike be affected if I run a 14 on the front at 44 on the rear?

Thanks in advance!
