Default 95 f3 starting issues

Hey everyone, as riding season is coming up I'm trying to get my 95 cbr 600 f3 going. I'm having an issue when starting. It won't start with choke on. Will crank and crank and pop the exhaust. If I turn choke off and crank it'll do the same. If I roll on the throttle some itll eventually start. When its running it seems to run fine. I've done the valve clearance and its got good gas and new plugs.

My next step was going to put a dynojet stage 1 kit on it since it has a kn filter and slip on muffler. And rebuild the rest of the carbs with new floats and gaskets.

My question is I did the ram air mod to bypass the solenoids and emission crap. I read on one forum that after doing that mod you don't need a fuel pump, just gravity feed from the petcock/tank. Could that be the issue? Seems like I'm flooding it when starting so was curious if maybe my fuel pump is the issue due to the ram air mod. If not any other insight would be helpful

It's not uncommon for the small passages in the carbs to get gummed up after sitting over winter. The enrichment circuit is one of the common ones to get affected. Disassembly and cleaning is really the only way to fix. As for the fuel pump. You're going to have issues at large throttle openings and at high RPM. I don't think it's having an affect when starting though.

If you are opening the throttle while starting, then you are defeating the choke/enrichment circuit of the carburetor. It relies on the throttle being closed to function properly.

Thank you I appreciate the response. I have an extra set of carbs that I'm gna go ahead and clean/rebuild. So in your opinion should I keep the fuel pump on it? The opening the throttle is with the choke off. The bike won't start with the choke on no matter what. Only choke off and rolling throttle open and closed several times. I'll get these carbs done and hopefully everything will be good afterwards. I appreciate the response again

I would keep the fuel pump, at higher revs it will ensure that you are getting enough fuel to prevent starvation. That is the way it designed after all.
