from what i know when coils go bad thay just stop working but then if the case was a bad coil with weak spark or intermitent spark i would have 2 cylinders that would be colder than the rest

yeah guys try to ssync your carbs... start there its an older bike you should definately just check on them to see if they have been synced recently its just a general maintenance thing that needs to be done every so often... lol it makes us all want to upgrade to fuel injection

cold cranking there are a lot of things to take into consideration which can really affect the bike.

cold weather (especially here in AL) means lots of condensation and water on/in my bike. moisture and such are never good things for our bikes.
a battery is stressed harder when its cold, (which id imagine makes it harder to start)
oil (depending on the make and such) has a vast impact on your engine starting. i remember my bike taking forever to start until i moved to rotella synthetic.

its just easier to go warm to hot, than cold to hot, in the case of motorcycles.

in response to you spiceymeowmix... i live in south eastern NC... during my trials... i would try starting it in 80 to 90 degree weather... with those results. (and still the same, even worse with 50-60 degree temps now). impossible to start without choke, and with choke, itd run up to 4-5k rpm.... i cut choke off, and down to 1k - 800rpms for about 2-3mins before i could touch the throttle without it bogging.
