Here's one I've never come across.......have any of you?
I am currently on my second 1992 CBR 600 F2. I rode my first one for 12 years before it finally
passed on. I put over 178,000 miles on it, got hit by a car, killed two deer, and yet the bike still
ran as good as new after each rebuild.Oh sure, it cost me as much to fix it as it would have cost to buy a new one,
but I liked the challenge of putting it back together.

About my second 92CBRF2. I am the third owner of it,first owner put 7000 mikles on it,
the second owner put about 3000 on it.I put the other 21000 on it myself.
Some of you may have seen my other post about this bike stumbling on takeoff.
I now have another symptom, and it is throwing me off big time. After a good speed of 75/80+
when I come to a stop, I can notice a rotten egg smell. Today at the gas station I noticed it again.
I smelled the exhaust tip, not coming from there. I sniffed around the engine, trying not to look
too stupid while I did it. I can't tell where it is coming from. My guess, is the charcol canister.
I won't know until tomorrow when I begin tearing the bike down to replace the plugs and all
the rubber hoses that over the years have stiffened and split. I know automobile cats get
dirty and smell like rotten egss, and this is the type of odor that is coming from my bike.
Yet there is no catalytic converter on this bike.

Has anyone ever had this happen to their CBR? I know once I pull the plugs, I'll get a lot of info as
to the combustion condition. Our California gas is so refined you can almost drink it.
No longer does it contain the gums and varnishes of the past, so I don't suspect bad fuel.
I do suspect, clogged, damaged,mis routed or missing emission equipment.
What a way to start out the riding season.........taking the bike apart.
*#&$)#*it all though, I sure can't afford to pay someone else to do it.

If anyone can throw an idea or helpfull hint my way, I'd sure appreciate it.

 

is that a california model with the soda can thing underneath?

maybe that's causing the sulfur smell sorta like a catalytic converter on a car?

 

178xxx mile's that's bad ***!! my 93 f-2 has 59xxx mile's and I keep thikin tht's high cuz every body's got new bike's or alot less mile's than me. I've never smell'ed that from mine and I got cali model too, sometime's I smell anti freeze at 1st but it goe's away after I start to look for it, and ya I too start sniffin around the bike lookin like a freak[:@] like I'am tryin to get high or somthin good luck!!

 

Maybe, just maybe it's hehehehe the soda can . I like that, never heard it called that before.
I always thought those canisters just pulled in gas fumes and stored them until
the engine was started, then they would be drawn in and burned off.
This is the area that will get my attention first and I am trying to think if there is a way
to remove it temporarily then take the bike out for a quickie and see if I can duplicate
the conditions that brought the smell on a couple of times before.

Somewhere here in my messy workshop, I have the 196 page Honda Service Manual burned onto a CD Rom in a .pdf file.
I can burn you a copy and send you one if you like. I find it useful at times to just print the page or two that concerns
the area I am working on at the time, instead of dirtying up my whole manual.

Seems easy enough to remove this canister and to attach the ends together. I don't think I'd just plug them at first
unless it lead to flooding somehow, and I'd also keep an eye on the plugs to see if it changed the way the ignition was firing,
i.e. richer or leaner

I appreciate it-- but its ok I'll just leave it on for now.

Don't have a garage because we live in a condo..but maybe one day if we get a house i'll try to do that mod.

Any luck on pinning down that smell?

 

No Luck, had the bike stripped down to bare minimum too.
I think it is the canister, but to be sure I have to take it off.
That will be next weekend, on Sunday I will be busy.
It happens when the tank is near reserve, so I have to burn
off more fuel and just wait and see if I can duplicate the problem.

Installed new plugs today, the stumbling is better but it still exists.
Tomorrow I am picking up a stock exhaust and removing my Yoshi
Slip-On to see if that helps. Doubt it will, but it gives me an excuse
to get out of the house to go pick it up.

 

Just a thought on that smell. check your battery after riding and see if it very hot. A bad VR cooked my battery and had that same type of smell.

 

I checked the battery today, but only for tightness of the cables and to see if the case showed any signs
of swelling. Sniffed it too, no odd smells. Good idea to check after a ride, I will do that. This sure has me puzzled.
