Default Speedo went out/gauge cluster

While riding to work today, my speedo went out. It started to gradually fail. First it was telling me I was going 30, 15, then 0 mph. I was going around 65-70 freeway speed. Now, it doesn't work at all and my odometer won't either. Furthermore, my temp gauge had failed 3 months prior...now the only thing that works are my turn signals, highbeam, and tachometer.

I checked the fuse for my cluster and it's fine. My bike does have 50k miles and I think it's falling apart everyday I ride it! My speedo cable is in there, so visually it seems fine. Nothing loose or broken. I'm guessing the internals of the cable is just so fatigued that it failed? I'm not looking to spend anymore $ on this bike other than critical engine components. I plan to run this F2 into the ground. I just wanted to know if I could fix this without having to buy a new cable. If I have to, I might as well lose the entire cluster as well and go cheap with those digital trailtech vapor gauges to avoid speeding tickets

By the way, the cluster is heavily cracked and all the gauges are cracked as well. The previous owner(s) totaled the bike and I'm guessing...this probably has to do with the problem?... but yea, any inputs on a cheap remedy/fix?

The speedo is gear driven, not electric. Fuses wouldn't have any effect except turning the backlighting on or off. That cable running from your front hub is the speedo cable.

I had my bike do the same thing - what had happened is that the screw in connector on the back of my cluster had loosened, and the speedo would only work when the suspension compressed a little, which forced the cable back up into the socket it engages in.

Check both ends of the cable, tighten them up, if that doesn't make a difference, then pull the cable loose @ the hub, and you should be able to pull the inner cable out of the housing to inspect the ends and that the cable is intact.

If cable looks intact, and the housing is screwed securely into the speedo, then you need to check the gears in the hub. Pull the front wheel, pull the hub sending unit off, and check out the condition of the gear drive inside.

+1 on what Adrenalinjunky said, but you can check out the gear drive assembly for the speedo at the hub, to some degree, without removing the wheel - just unscrew the cable at the speedo gear/spacer assembly, and rotate the front wheel forward, while watching to see if the little "tab" sticking out, spins around...you can pinch it with your fingers, as you rotate the front wheel, and if you can hold it still while the wheel rotates forward, then you know the internals of that little doo-dad are shot.

Definitely check what he said first - I also, have had the speedo cable's threaded collar unscrew itself at the guage cluster - I dabbed just a smidge of medium threadlocking compound on the male threads at the cluster, before I tightened it up again...that was 16,000 miles ago.

Bad news. I believe my speedo cable is shot. I checked the hub and it's fine. I've also checked to see if the end from the cluster is loose. But no, it's on their tight. I stuck a small flathead into the end of the speedo cable, and started twisting it. All I hear is this abnormal clicking sound and resistance every time I twist it. This happens both clockwise and counter clock wise.

No worries...they aren't very expensive at all, if I remember correctly.

Ok, I thought it was going to be like $50 bucks since old CBR parts are expensive online. $20 isn't bad. A lot cheaper than a speeding ticket hehe.
