Is this right? ALOT of paint
I have recently started sanding down my fairings in order to repain them. Well ive been sanding and there are like 5 layers of pain. The primer gray it was, then a red, then yellow, then silver, then the white. Im positive the white is the actual plastic since plastics are originally white. My question is do i have to sand all the way down or can i just get to the yellow part and apply a few coats of primer?
I just went to walmart and bought some primer/filler. It says its for plastics, metals and fiberglass but non of the primer/fillers said for plastic. Is it still good to use? Or will it hold crappy?
To avoid problems later sand them ALL the way down. You will not need to worry about painting and sanding all those coats of primer(besides if your gona sand all that primer might as well sand the old paint off) also you will run into paint bubbling and not sticking. All in all if you don't have time or money to do it right you don't have time and money to do it twice. If your gona half *** it you might as well just spray bomb them. Iam speaking from xp, but do what you like as wee don't have to ride it you.
Just remember the difference between a good paint job and a bad one is in the prep work. even using rattle cans you can get a pretty good result if you do all the prep work the best that it can be done.
So i decided since im trying to do a good rattle can job ill take it all the way to the plastic. It was literally taking about 2-3 hours to get one fairing down with 60 grit sandpaper. I decided to get a stripper, paint stripper that is! So i went to homedepot and asked if they had any safe paint strippers and they gave me the safest one they had! Low STD's. j\k
bad joke! anyways
I tried it on a small piece and let it sit for 45 mins and the paint came off almost to the plastic. I just had to sand a little more off. Alot easier to do though! Anyways i did all the fairings today and some of the paint stripper set on the fairings for 3 hours. The plastic have not softened or become dried or cracked. This stuff really works and i would recommened for anyone wanting to strip their paint and not harm plastics. You can use it in doors cause its natural. I used it in my living room with plastic all over the floor cause the mosquitos here a horrible after 8. Smells like creamsicle kinda. haha Anyways it works and easily saved me 10 hours of work.
