You definitely need to get a functioning screen in place - with no other fuel filter between the petcock and the carbs, that means any dirt/debris that can fit in the holes in the petcock (the main, at the top of the tube, and the reserve at the base of the petcock), can then flow into the carbs, and that's no bueno!

This is how it should look. The filter,as you can see, slides over the metal tube and then the whole thing slide inside the tank. It is a snug little fit, not tight, just snug.

yes the petcock works,i checked that fuel flows out of it. i am really getting frustrated at this point. i checked compression, checked fuel, and spark. my next step is to go back into the carbs and give it a THOROUGH cleaning since i now realize (even though they looked clean before i did them) that i missed possible problem spots.ugh
