Default Ooops, blew past redline

Was toying around this morning in an empty business park with a nice almost 1/4 mile straight. Wanted to open it wide in first and second to get everything a workout and to get the exhaust blown out from the usual 3 and 4k rpm I usually ride at. Anyway, popped it into first and took off. Next thing I know I'm at 14,500 RPM. Was only there for a second or two and I was able to continue with my fun again and then ride for another our after that with no ill sounds. Are short blasts above redline like that normally OK?

It's amazing how fast even a bike 15 years old and with 29k miles can still get up and move like that, especially when I weigh 270. I am scared to even think how fast a liter bike would do with 2x the horses, 100 lbs less bike weight, and a rider 70lbs less than myself.

Your rev limiter cut in I would think.

That red area on your tach is the recommended maximum rev range. Engineers usually leave a little extra room for disaster. In other words a bike with a "rev limit of 15,000 rpm's can usually take a few hundred extra before bad things happen. And it would take more than a second for that to occur.

I wouldn't suggest doing it every day...or even again.

But your bike will live and should be just fine. No worries.

I didn't know there was a rev limiter, but that would explain the few pops I heard. I heard the noise, looked down at the tach really quick and was like, "Oh, sh!!, better shift". I normally wouldn't worry with a newer bike, but the age made me worry a bit. Guess these things are as bulletproof as i hear they are.

2007 and 1987...all pistons and most mechanical parts were made of the same material.

Just the bore, stroke, etc. would be different...and Fi of course.

The pops were indeed the rev limiter, cutting your bike's spark in and out really rapidly.

I say practice listening to your motor. After time, it's easy to know what RPM you're running without even looking down.

I really don't think you screwed anything up...The local stunt team revs their bikes up till the limiter cuts in and keeps them there for quite a long time during the burn-outs...
