Note; Fairings are brittle in the cold.
Funny story.
I decided to take my bike out for a last ride before things get really cold. Just before I got on, as it was warming up, I stepped back and really looked my bike over. I really admired it in all of it's 90s fairing glory. After warm up, I stopped by the gas station to fill up the tank all the way, add fuel stabilizer, and check and set tire pressures. Went to my favorite 80 mph on ramp and let her have it.
Well, it isn't the smoothest on ramp in the world, so as I am sure you guys know, winding out the throttle is really squirly with a 500 lb bike and no steering stabilizer on a bumpy road... Plus my fork seals recently went bad... Again. But as I was getting off the on ramp and onto the freeway, I specifically remember something hitting my right toe. Not hard, just a nick. Meanwhile, as I was entering the freeway, I noticed a beautiful 2010-2011 BMW 3 series speeding up along my left side. Thinking he wanted to race or tool around, I was all for it. So I was WOT until about 100, then slowed way down and got behind him, waiting for him to WOT. Nothing. So I flew past him again, and again I think he began chasing me. This time when I slowed, he got up next to me and gestured backwards. ?? Oh well. My exit is coming, so I get off. It wasn't until I was looking my bike over at a red light 2 mins from home before I noticed... lol. It must have been from the huge bump in the on ramp. I catch air off of if I enter too fast, lol. It sort of sucks though. I have ridden that same route so many other times under the same bumpy, cold, windy, and fast conditions... No fairing troubles any other time.
Oh well. As long as it is cosmetic, I am not sweating it. Besides, I have always been more of a streetfighter kind of guy anyways. So in an attempt to scrape together some extra money to mod a decent looking streetfighter, I will be selling off all my remaining fairings. Just a heads up- I will make a post in the for sale section when I am ready to sell.
Enjoy happy and safe late season riding, guys. Be sure all your fairing fasteners are in.
