The CBR's valves should stay in spec damn near forever, if there is a loud rattle sound coming from the motor - that's your Cam Chain Tensioner, which should be replaced with a manual tensioner made by a company called APE.

He may have heard this noise and figured it was valves, it's a common mistake.

The regulator/rectifier is another common issue with these bikes you have to watch out for. If your battery suddenly starts losing charge, the R/R may just be the culprit and should be checked as well as the usual suspects. They make aftermarket ones with cooling fins on them and can easily be found on ebay.

If it has an OEM CCT (hydraulic) it's likely the culprit.

Swap it for the $60 APE CCT and be at peace with it
