When you find the right bolt, use threadlocker when you put it in. Mine was starting to get loose - good thing I saw it before it became a problem.

It's a shoulder bolt. Shoulder bolts have a defined length near the head which is not threaded so it can be used as a pivot like in the shifter linkage for motorcycles. The bolt sometimes has a groove in the unthreaded part to hold grease. As mentioned, there are rubber o-rings at both ends of the pivot. You will still need to correctly tighten the bolt because if it is loose, it will come off while you are riding and when too tight, the linkage will not operate as smoothly.

I don't know if the bolt shown in your picture is an original because the one on my '94 is a hex bolt that has a round head that installs flush with the linkage pivot.

+1. Had the same issue while riding in Duluth, think Sna Fransisco hills. Thankfully the bolt was still in the shifter lever, dragging on the ground. I hand tightened it, drove to the parts store n used their wrench on it. then took it apart and used locktite to ensure this never happened again.
