EVO SHIFT STAR / EBC SRK review
I installed a FP EVO SHIFT STAR and an EBC SRK clutch, while I was there, almost 2 weeks ago. After being a retatrd and not clocking the clutch basket correctly upon re-assembly, then not being able to figure out why the fu**ing clutch would not engage, I faninaly got the bike running the next day. The actual install took me about 3 hours including fairings off/ on. My first attempt at removing the clutch cover, btw.
The reason I installed the shift star was i was having LOTS of issues with missed shifts / false neturals / popping out of gear (averaging a couple per day). Since the install I have had 4 instances of missed shifts / 0 false netruals / 0 popping out of gear issues. The missed shifts I will take the blame for as they were all 1-2 shifts and I had not re-adjusted the shifter lever down at that time yet. Since adjusting the shifter lefer (2 or 3, can't remember) teeth down, using the teeth on the rod insetead of the threaeded rod, I found I am able to properly pull it from 1st clean into 2nd without incident every time.
When I dissessembeled the shift star I found that the old factory shift star actually had higher peaks and vallies than the EVO unit and that the factory spring cam was a roller design similar to the EVO unit. I am not sure what the advantage is of changing the whole star wheel and cam lever vs. just changing the spring. For the $$$$$$$ I would buy just the spring if I had to do this again and see how that works out (they do make a star wheel conversion kit if u already have the spring).
The only other issue was the INSANE difficulty of finding neutral for the first week. The spring was SO strong it would go from 1st straight to 2nd and back directly to 1st when trying to find neutral. I actually just hit the kill switch a couple of times so I could let go of the clutch when sitting at long lights because I just could not convince it to find neutral. That issue has gone away now, neutral is still a little elusive but I can get there in no more than 3 tries and usually on the first attempt now.
I read some people complain about not being able to shift comfortably after installing the EVO when wearing shoes, I do not have any issue of the sort though it may be when using a factory star wheel as the ramps are higher on the factory star wheel. My bike is my only running transport at the moment and I wear almost exclusively shoes when riding.
As for the EBC clutch, I dont notice much of a difference other than the stronger springs. It does seem to be a touch stronger and smoother when launching hard, but ......
(sorry for the horrible spelling)
