can't keep my chain tight?

can't keep my chain tight?
This may be a stupid question and I'll be the first to admit that I am on the beginning of the learning curve with bikes. This is my first bike and I love it to death but every time I pull something apart I think, this isn't like a car at all....
Anyways, my chain keeps coming lose. I have to tighten it up every 150/200 miles and that is just normal riding. Do I need new sprockets and a new chain? How tight should the chain be when I tighten it up. I have been trying to make sure I don't over tighten it.
Thanks in advance for the help.

RE: can't keep my chain tight?
There is an indicator on the chain tensioner that tells when the chain needs to be replaced. You shoul be able to move the chain up or down 3/4 of an inch in between the sprockets. You may pull out the axle and chain tensioners and check them. I have seen one before where the threads were messed up on the tensioner and because it was hard to turn the guy was not getting the chain tight enough on one side. Either way, you should be going 1000 miles before even thinking about tightening.
