Default Broken Valve Stem

So I got home from work tonight and decided to clean up my bike. I was cleaning my rear wheel and bumped the valve stem, it brokeandimmediately started spewing air. I'm no mechanic, but have a friend who's pretty good at fixing about anything and he's helped me w/my bike before.

My question is this: what will be involved in fixing this? What will I need to buy and where should I look for it? I was planning on replacing my chain & sprockets soon w/ the help of my friend so I guess we'll do it all at the same time. Just looking for any tips or advice anybody may have.

Thanks!

Default RE: Broken Valve Stem

you will have to take the wheel off, break the bead of the tire loose and demount one side....then you can reach in with a new valve stem...insert it in the hole and pull it through (a pliers woudl work, but there is a tool for this).

If you carry your wheel in, a shop might chanrge you $20....without the right tools, you can screw upthe sealing bead of the tire.

If you want to try to do it yourself....Valve stems come in a couple different sizes...measure the hole to make sure you buy the right one.

Thanks, how hard is it to get the rear wheel off? I feel like I should be able to do it but I'm afraid I'll get started and get stuck. Any advice?
