i agree with hershey. if youre getting it to start up and its running all funky like that, the carbs need to be looked at. have no fear though! they arent as bad as you think!

also, why are there zip-ties on your header? [8D]

Not on the header... I was using a zip-tie to keep the fan wiring in place, and the long end was hanging down and touching the headers (which get hotter like 5X as fast as stock manifold on my RX-7...).

I've got two sets of carbs... I think I'll pull the "bad" apart for fun (gives me something to do since I don't live where I keep the bike...)

How hot should the engine be before I can check the ignition timing?

BTW, I broke the stock T-connector for the fuel and replaced it with a vacuum T from Advanced auto... Should I switch it to the one that's on the other carbs? Is it a filter or something special that NEEDS to be on the bike?

The T junction is nothing special, it's fine.

I started breaking down my other carbs, and I realized that the stock T-connector is probably 20-30% bigger (in terms of ID) than the generic one I put on my bike... this might be choking my fuel off when I get off the choke (which is designed to suck more fuel into the engine).

The carbs pull the fuel in from the float bowls, I doubt the smaller T junction would have a diverse effect such as that.

It only pulls more fuel through as the level in the float bowl lowers, but the fuel should be readily available in the lines to fill the void.

Geh... I really don't have to deal with the float valve cover screws... I'm probably gonna have to drill and extract half of them, and then replace them all with bolts

Yeah the headsvery soft metal... I have to replace a few of mine as well, be careful with the float bowl gasket.

Do you have to replace the O-rings? It seems like you would... considering how old they probably are.

I'm replacing mine because one got pinched, but you only really have to if they leak.
