So I'm stripping my bike so that I can work on it and see what needs fixing, but I don't know what to do with the fuel tank. I only see the one hose coming out so if I want to drain the tank do I just pull that off and let it drain into a gas can?

 

Drain it into your car/truck/moms minivan...

Don't you have a petcock? just leave the petcock attached and in the "off" position, and don't lay it upside down.

 

I'm not as up to speed on bikes as with cars, but is a petcock the switch to turn the fuel on/off? If it is, yes I have one but where would I detach the fuel line then? right after it?

 

Yes the petcock is a flow valve, you detach the fuel line from the aluminum body - make sure the valve is set to the off position (normally horizontal)

That will stop the fuel from flowing through the petcock, a little bit of fuel will spill from the hose so don't freak out.

That's all you need to do: Turn valve off, remove fuel line, set tank aside. Done!

 

I wouldn't trust the petcock if i was you. Test it first. I thought mine worked then I had gas leaking all over the place. Best thing to do is just drain it into a gas can from the top of the tank if the off switch doesn't work.

 

Interesting.. Arrow pointing up is off for me.. Horizontal is on and Down is reserve.
