Default Tyre Advice Needed

Right, the tyres (Tires, for those of you of the American persuasion..) of my 1989 CBR were last replaced in 1999, so they are nearing the end of their service life. Plenty of tread, but they are getting mouldy...

I don't need anything too sporty, as I'm not a fast rider. I am doing Lands End to John O'Groats this summer, which will be about 3000 miles half of which will be in the wet (i.e. Scotland), so need something suitable for that...

I have the following options. Any suggestions?

Avon Roadrider
Continental TKV11/12
Metzeler Lazertech
Pirelli Sports Demon
or some sort of Dunlop

Thanks for your help.

I love my Pirelli Sport Demons. Heat up quickly, not too hard, and they provide tons of traction wet or dry.

You can also take a look at this thread, there is some good tire info on there.

I've had new MetzelerME33 frt & ME55 rear, lasted 7000km, then ME330 frt and ME550 rear, whichlasted 7500km, and now Pirelli Sport Demons which will probably last 6-7000km.I've probably pushed the Pirellis harder than the Metzelers. These all wereoriginal sizes (110/80x17 front, 130/80x17 rear, bias ply).

Adealer saidthatMetzeler LaserTecs are just a new name for the older ME series. Both brandsseemed to handle quite well, not that I've tried lot of different tyres and bikes. The onlynegative about the Pirellis is that the front tyre seems to scallop fairly heavilyeach side of the centre line, so I'm looking for a tyre with a tread pattern that is likely to scallop less. Seems race pattern tyres might be less prone to that, but then are they as good at wet weather grip? If I can't get something less prone to scalloping I'll stick with Sport Demons.

Interesting thread, Rrasco.

Exactly what do you mean by "scalloped"?

Indeed, I learned a bit about tires from it.

I bought Bridgestone Bt45's (front and rear) last year in the stock sizes. I only got caught in the rain once, but I had no problems with them. I am not a very aggressive rider, so I can not comment much about outright performance, but for the riding I do, they have given me no reason to complain.

Might have the wrong word. I mean the tread blocks wear unevenly so they are sort of tapered from leading edge down to trailing edge. Sometimes go concave. Attached photos are crap, but sort of show it.Vernier caliper is lying along the block, but the back end is right down in the groove at the front of the next block back, and the front end of the caliper iswell clear of the block in front. Shadow shows the concave effect. Other photo shows the difference in height from the bottom of the groove between back end of one block (1.5mm) and leading edge of the next one (3.5mm).
