Trans. issues anyone
I'm riding a 89 F1 and whenever I get on the throttle hard above 2k in 2nd gear it pops in and out of gear. I don't have the problem in any other gear. I've been told it sounds like a shift fork, any ideas or opinions?
My 89 will not stay if first gear at all.
The people I have talked to say that it is either a bent shift fork, or the dogs on the gear are worn. I have not talked to anyone who has fixed this problem on these bikes. I do have a service manual, and I am thinking about tearing into it one of these days.
I do know that you have to split the case to get at the gears on these, that probably means pulling the motor.

i saw a hurricane engine on craigslist in florida for $60. the guy says its just the trans and cylinders, the head was removed. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/mcy/1017316561.html
i've split and rebuilt many two strokes. sometimes you need a special tool to remove a flywheel, or hold a shaft. the manual covers everything, read through it all first. i bag and label parts as i remove them. to keep the side cover and case bolts separate and in same order, i punch holes in a small peice of carboard with a screwdriver, and put the bolts in how i take them out. use an old copper penny between gear teeth to hold them to tighten or remove bolts. when you split the case, keep the two gear shafts seperate. make sure the right washers and spacers are where they need to go.
Its pretty involved, but the manual covers everything. keep it clean, take your time, and i bet you can find and fix your problem. i think its a bent shifter fork. i'd consider rings and clutch, along with a gasket kit.
