Default Speedometer Quit

My bike has been parked for the last couple weeks because of the cold rainy weather. I started it up today and took it for a spin, to find out my speedometer stopped reading. Stopped completely, not even a flicker.

All of my other gauges and lights work just fine, so I don't believe it to be an electrical problem.

I had the front wheel off early last summer to replace the wheel bearings, and the speedometer drive gear seemed a little loose but it always seemed to work fine.

Anyone have any suggestions about what to start looking at?

The speedo is completely mechanical sans the back lights. It gives you a reading while rolling downhill even if the power is turned off. The most propable cause is a snapped cable. It could have been snapped for some time now but the ends have been tangled together and have come loose from each other when you've pushed the bike backwards. Detatch the lower end and pull the insides out, should come without much of a fight. Probly get only a partial wire to your hand. If it is intact push it back in and turn it back and forth a little to ease the upper end back into the gear in the gauge.

I will pull the front wheel and have a look. Hopefully it won't be too hard to find a new cable if that's indeed the problem.

You should not have to remove the wheel. The cable should be attached to the drive gear by a nut or by a screw via a flange.

Yup. 1 Philips screw holds the cable in place, just undo and inspect. I suspect its a broken cable, or it has become detached behind the cluster.

Yes, likely broken. I have replaced a broken one at 40000kms.
