smoking and smelling...HELP!
i had to jump my bike yesterday because i left the key switch on the aux power. after i jumped the bike and got the seat back on and was abouut to ride off, i noticed a plume of smoke coming from between the seat and right side cover. this only smoked for a second or two. after i left work(where i jumped the bike) the bike stalled and would not start up without a jump. i went home and came back about an hour later and got the bike jumped again and went home. after i pulled it in the garage i could smell an unusual smell coming from the bike. it almost smelt like rubber burning or melting and it smelled like it was coming from under the gas tank. does anyone know what this might be. i have not investigated extensively yet but i hope its not something bad. thanks in advance.
the CDI box is behind the right side REAR cover just below the seat line. you might've smoked it when you jumped the bike.
hmmm, under the gas tank, huh?
let's see what is under the gas tank...
the airbox sits directly under the gas tank, and under that is the carbs with vacuum hoses and fuel lines.
therefore, if it is burning rubber you are smelling, my best guess is a loose hose or rubber mount is touching the engine causing it to heat up and start to smell like it's burning.
i would take off body panels from both sides of the bike and go through with a flashlight to see if anything is hanging loose. see if there is anything that looks like it's got burn marks on it, like crispy edges on the rubber, or black marks near electrical items. look for any wet spot signifying leaks either from gas or coolant. leaky coolant on a hot engine could smell like what you describe.
also, sounds to me that your battery might have had it. maybe it's not holding a charge or charging system is not working properly. you'll have to get the bike started and put a meter on the battery to see if it is charging.
hmmm, now that i think of it, you said the bike stalled on your way home. to me that means no spark, thus no spark from coils, no spark from coils means CDI might be hosed. take a sniff of your CDI and see if it smells like its burnt.
i've never jumped my bike for fear of frying something. so i've always just tried to find a way to pop the clutch.
hope this helps.

the battery that is in it is 2 weeks old. i just left the ignition switch where it leaves the tail light on while i was at work so it drained it. the bike stalled similar to when it starts up and is not warm enough. idle also seems to be a little low, needs adjusting as well.
yeah, find yourself a nice incline, something that will get you some speed. a long driveway, sloping sidewalk, hell, run with it and jump on if you have to.
have clutch lever pulled in and shifter in 2nd gear. when you have some speed, about 10mph, let the lever go and you'll feel the bike jerk a little as it tries to overcome the gear and it should fire up. once it fires up pull the clutch lever back in immediately so you don't stall the bike in gear, and then shift back into neutral.
i don't know if you drive a stickshift car, but it's the same thing.

no i dont and i have no experience with manual transmissions except for my bike. if i would have known that can work i would have never jumped my bike. although i did conceptualize it on my own. thanks mich
