No, not an alternator problem, since it only produces electricity when the engine is running.
Manual says to check the spark unit (CDI ) connections, take some voltage readings at the CDI connectors and to check the pulse generator. Was the bike running before.... need more info.
Have you messed with anything or did it just suddenly not work?
I would check and clean the connectors at the CDI first. What year is your bike?
If you give us more info, I / we can help you troubleshoot.
BTW, how do you know that you have power at the coils, 'cause if you do then you should have a spark. Did you get a voltmeter? You can pick up a good cheap one at an auto parts store or at a
Home Depot/Lowe's.

thanks ballistic, ordered a multimeter off the net now, just waitin on it arriving. I checked power to the coils just with a bulb, it lit up. it's an H reg bike, dont know what was done to it before i got it, I have rebuilt many 2 stroke crossers so grabbed this bike as it was going free. bloke b4 replaced the wiring loom and said since then it has never run. I have a manual and have checked they all go to the right places and i have took it off, stripped it all down and cleaned connections to no avail. replaced cdi, coils, leads, all from a scrappy, and a new battery and plugs. will let u know what i find out with the multi-meter. Just thought the alternator may create the spark. battery turns starter motor-startor motor turns engine-engine turns alternator-alternator makes electricity- electricity makes spark? lol, and i thought it would be easy to sort! lol

If you have an '87-'88 bike/ wiring loom and a '89-'90 CDI then it won't work ( without jumpering )because of the sidestand issue. All it takes to fix it is to run a wire from a pin on the cdi to ground so that the CDI thinks that the side stand is up. Obviously, this is just one possibility. Check the number of wires coming out of the 6pin connector ( loom side ) at the CDI . '87/'88 has 4. '89/'90 has 6. Then check the number of pins / wires coming out of the CDI. If they don't match then it could be the problem. Or since you are using parts from a 'breaker' ( right term, mate?) then you might have a bad part already.
