Plug Wire Help
I just picked up a 1990 600, and it is running rough/misfiring. Especially at idle and in the lower RPMs, say under 4k or so. It surges/sputters/wants to die. It just sounds more like a harley than a smooth inline 4.
Anyway, I'm assuming its a carburetor issue, but when doing the spark plugs yesterday I came across a potential problem.
The Haynes manual states cylinder identification as 1-2-3-4, left to right, with number 1 being at the alternator end. I understand this to mean that cylinder 1 is on the side with the muffler, and cylinder 4 is on the side with the kickstand. Stated in a different way, when sitting on the bike, cylinder 4 is on your far left side, cylinder 1 is on your far right side.
Is this interpretation correct?
The reason I ask is because on my bike, they are reversed. The plug wires are labeled. Number 4 is on the right (muffler side), and number 1 is on the left(kickstand side).
Can someone look at their bike and tell me how its supposed to be.
Thanks in advance.

Haynes manual is correct, just had to figure this out myself yesterday because I put all the plug wires on wrong. Sitting on the bike your alternator is on the left side, and the clutch is on the right side (you can see your clutch cable on the top of the case). Cylinder ident is 1-2-3-4. Your wires are numbered, put them in this order. Ignore firing order (1-2-4-3). Just make sure they are all seated pressed from the center of the plug it should click down.
I had mine all messed up, and it wouldnt run at all, then I put my wires in by firing order. Which it would run but back fired every few seconds.

OK so if im reading what you guys are saying correctly then IGNORE the 1-2-4-3 firing order and just keep the spark plug wires in the correct numerical order from left to right (1-2-3-4) . I'm confused as to why the manual suggest 1-2-4-3 just like the rest of you guy. lol but my bike isnt starting either way right now lol....im still thinking its a spark problem somewhere though
