Answer: just removed the tensioner. No need to bother about valve cover/timing.

I just bought a brand new oem CCT and gasket, so once I get the old one out I will try to mess with it to make something adjustable and reliable.

Think I had one of these in a spare engine.. looks the same. Anyway threw it in to my current engine and works fine.. bliss! no chain noise!!
