Hello CBR Honda Hurricane forum, You all have a very informative site and yes I am new to your site but not new to motorcycling.

I recently picked up my 31st motorcycle a 1987 Honda Hurricane.

(Currently own a #29-03 GL1800 Honda and #30-95FE501 Husaberg Street Legal Supermotard)

And, oh my she is in need of help, I answered an add in my local news paper advertising a 750 hurricane for sale and to make offer.

At the time when I saw the add, I thought Honda did'nt make 750 Hurricane and I knew the old canes were fitted with 17 inch rims, so I made an appointment to see the old bike thinking I could use the rims for a future Supermotard project.

So I called the number in the add and the sellers mom answers the call and she said come on over and take a look, so I get to the home of the cane and boy was she in need of TLC.

The bike had been flipped and the sub frame is bent and twisted and every piece of plastic on the bike is broke, the odometer had 22,000. The cane had 17 inch red mag rims with decent rotors and the calipers were all their so I am thinking supermoto rims, cool.

Actually I started looking deeper over the bike and it appears to be a complete Hurricane, crashed but complete.

So the kid who was selling the cane showed up and we started negotiating a price. I asked him if it ran and with out question he pulled out the key choked the motor and the old bike fired rite up and he ran her down the street and back and she sat and idled for several minutes till I turned her off.

I again asked him about the price and he said he was looking for $500.00, that was what he had invested in the clutch for the cane and looking at the motor I could see the new gasket between the case and cover. So I offered $300.00 and he took it, damn I should have offered $200.00, Oh well at least I have the rims for $300.00

A new set Excel 17 inch Motard rims without hubs and rotors would cost at least $800.00, so
I am ahead of the game on my next project. Cool !

So I trailer-ed the old cane home and removed all of the plastic and then took her to the neighbor hood car wash for a badly need bath, then back home to the garage and put her on the bike lift for further inspection.

I pulled the carbs, soaked, cleaned and re-installed and synced the carbs, cleaned the plugs put some fresh fuel in her and to my surprise the old cane actually runs very well, she is still on the bike lift but she seems to have life left.

I drained the oil and changed the filter and filled her up with Amzoil synthetic and I started the cane up on the bike lift and let her run for 40 mins letting her get the cob webs out, the water pump pumps and the radiator fan cycles off and on and she has 13.9 volts across the battery at idle.

Hmmmm.

So maybe I will get her titled and buy some plastic and put my 2nd motard project on hold for now, we will see, possibly a naked cane is in my future?

Oh well, I just wanted to tell my story of my Hurricane. Pictures forthcoming !

Thanks for site it’s been a big help already !!!

Congrats on the bike. You may have a naked cane for a while, but buying plastics for these things is a joke. Have fun...

nice pickup on a running cane for $300. if you do want to get some plastics www.airtech-streamlining.com has got them all, they are pretty thick as well. its amazing how much abuse these bikes can take, mine has 38,000 miles on it and ive put over 3,000 on it myself and its still ticking, had some problems after the mechanics touched it(they were completely incompetent and i was better off not taking it in), buut seemed to sort those out and now she rips hard. it only starts stuttering a little after i ride her for a bit, but other than that runs great still.

Hey, it seems you know about the Hurricanes, I have a 1987 600F Hurricance, everything runs fine.....

Except for when I'm at a stoplight now and I can't shift from 1st to neutral, so basically I have to hold the clutch in now, But the wierdest thing, is that as soon as I turn the engine off, It shifts from 1st to Neutral w/ ease....

Just wondering if you had any advice on what exactly it could be.

I already changed the oil, replaced the coolant and replaced the thermostat, pretty basically knowledgeable about bikes.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Hurricane '87

i have not had a problem shifting from any gear to neutral except for when i just got the bike and was getting used to it (i was not able to get it between gears, i would shift from 1-2 then 2-1 over and over). very occasionally if i put it in neutral at a light, then go to shift to first when the light turns green it will stick in neutral and its very hard to get into gear, i basically just start stomping on the shifter until it goes. and i do not know what is causing that, i just creditted it to the clutch possibly being old.

My Husaberg Supermoto will not shift into neutral when stopped, and I have to hold the clutch in for the duration , and this really sucks. So when coming to a red light on the Berg and the bike is rolling but not to a complete stop I try to remember to click her into neutral.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for but it does help on the left hand muscle.

So far my Cane is ok on shifting, I did raise the shifter position up a little higher, but the bike is shifting well at this time.

I wonder if you bent the shifter shaft in a spill or something, usually Honda's are good shifters unless something is out of wack.

Welcome to the board! Good luck restoring that beasty -- might wanna try some sharkskins or similar aftermarket plastics.
