my rebuild
just picked up my 2nd cbr and i have a question does anyone know what the black box with a sponge filter in it is for as my uk carbs dont have it the other diffrence is my uk carbs are fed fuel by a single inlet inbetween carb 2 and 3 the nasty lookin ones are duel fed 1 inlet for 1 and 2 carb other inlet feeds 3 and 4 . maybe i have a non uk bike? cheers all
In that picture the hoses between 1-2 and 3-4 that connect to each other are vent hoses for emissions, not for fuel. As far as I know all of the Hurricane carbs use the same fuel setup with the single feed into the middle.
The other part you are describing sounds like a charcoal canister also for the emissions system. If it's not hooked up anymore or not functional you can remove all of the emissions equipment without creating any problems with the engine. I'm not sure what I did with those carb vent hoses, I would have to go look at my bike to be sure, but they don't need to be hooked up to anything if I remember correctly on that part.
Very nice job on the carbs too, that must have taken quite a bit of time to polish everything up. Looks great!

anouther question my 87 is e reg new cbr is h reg does that make it a 1990 and if so were does the extra power come from 93bhp instead of 85 bhp this makes me wonder wich is the better engine/carbs my 87 or the 10k less miles 1990 one
I think you can just plug the vacuum hoses if you pull off the California smog stuff. I'm in Washington state but my bike was originally from Cali. It had about half of the smog stuff missing when I bought it and at least one vacuum line was plugged with a sheet metal screw (lotsa hillbilly shadetree mechanics in WA). I'm plugging all those lines and will see how it works out. You don't even want to know what Cheap Cycle Parts wants for a replacement charcoal canister.
From the CBR600F1 superreview on this forum:
"For the 1989 model year the hugely successful CBR600 got upgraded with minor tweeks. It looked the same jelly mould bike but underneath it got higher compression (11.3:1, up from 11:1), the cam timing was revised, bigger carbs fitted, new ignition and a beefed up clutch. It also got adjustable rebound damping. Power was increased from 85Bhp to 93Bhp and, apparently was a noticeable difference."
By the way those carbs looks great.

being in the uk im not going to need the black box then just a case of plugging the holes ?
Yes, I got mine running today with all the lines plugged. The cluster of four small lines I managed to pull and replace with a 3/16" cap at the vacuum spigot on each carb. The two bigger ones that come together got a cap at the T junction where they meet, as I didn't want to pull the carbs apart to cap the hard to reach spigots for those lines.
