thanks for the advice michigan...but my dad already ripped the engine out before I got a chance to try it out. apparently he found a new engine for the bike at a salvage yard and bought it with a lifetime guarantee. So right now the bike is hanging from our car lift totally gutless. I'll post some pics when I get home from work. We're going to start putting the new one in today.

Look at it this way, you picked up the bike cheap, you'll drop a couple hundred bucks to make it operational. It is a great bike, it's no RR but don't let the age fool you. These bikes haul a$$.

Ok I have new update.

My dad and I pulled the old motor and put the new one in. It went in much easier than we thought it would considering we're used to "shoe-horning" big block V8's into small muscle cars like Novas and Mustangs. We really had no problems other than we broke the dipstick on the old motor. So today we're going to put the carbs back on and add some oil and coolant and try to fire it up.

That's another question I have...When my dad pulled the carbs off he said that he didn't make any adjustments on them (intentionally or accidentally) but I'm still wondering if we're going to have to have them synced or re-jetted for this new motor. Any advice?

pretty sure you dont need to rejet unless you put a new exhaust on it, but the syncing depends on if they were synced right to begin with, or if they were messed with, its kind of hard to do it unintentionally but i would do it cause you have no way to know if they were right to begin with.

Update: It's running. And it's running good. The only weird thing...the shift pattern is reversed. Instead of it being 1 down 5 up, its 1 up 5 down. Not sure if I put something on wrong or if the transmission is just different, but I don't really mind.

So I have a bike now! Woopee
