+1 what gixxereater said. When your regulator goes bad your voltage will shoot up to 17 or 18 volts, which is why your lights are brighter and change brightness with rpms. When the regulator is working, it will top out the voltage at 14 or so, which is why the lights will stay the same brightness after a certain rpm.

Too many volts will boil your battery, too; and your alternator will burn up after a while too because it will be working at 100% nonstop. You can get an aftermarket VR from many parts suppliers, and it will work just fine if you make sure to wire it correctly.

And this is your bike trying to tell you to NEVER EVER think that Electric tape is enough to hold some wires together.

Gotcha. I didnt know the wires were that way until i took it apart. My lights dont change brightness though. They stay the same all the time. Just are brighter than they used to be. If it was the rectifier would it change brightness through RPMs? Mine stays the same. Guages just jump and runs like crap, then dies if i try to give it gas. It will keep running as long as i dont touch it. Its weird. I will tear it apart and check all wires to make sure all is tight, and in good order. If i have the same problem, i will order one and try the rectifier. Dont want to spend the 100+ bucks if thats not what it is. Thanks again for the replies.

There is a procedure in the Hurricane manual for checking the regulator/rectifier. It has been posted here in the past.

It never hurts to try it. Check the voltage coming off the R/R with a volt meter and see what it reads.
No..if it's shot, it will not change brightness, it will be bright all the time because it's constantly overcharging if it's running. If it works normally, it will get brighter with RPM up to about 3k where it tops out.

let us know what you get.

I figured out my problem last night. I tore the bike down and went over all the wiring and such. Found a couple things. First is that when the shop put my bike back together after the valve adjustment, they didnt hook any of the hoses back up under air box. They just threw it all on the bike. So i hooked it all up. My problem doesnt seem to be the Regulator/Rectifier. I inspected it. It looked fine visibly. No melted wires or anything. I then got to the main fuse thats on the right side of the bike by the Turn signal relay. The main power fuse. I pulled that open and noticed that the fuse wasnt even touching the metal. The plastic had melted a lil and warped so that the fuse wasnt making a connection. I bent the fuse ends to make a tighter fit, and turned the key. Walla, i had power. I started it and it ran like crap for a couple min. Backfired and such. Hadnt started it in a month though. After a lil warm up, i took it for a ride. Everything seemed to be great. Ran fine, and then idled fine when i got back to the house. I can order that piece for $15 bucks. So i will do that to correct that. I checked it while it was running since the plastics were all off. Nothing was getting hot (battery, fuse area, nothing), or seemed to be melting. I think it happened a while back when the rear turn signal bare wire touched metal. It fried my relays when that happened too. I guess it did more damage then i thought. The fuse must have been touching sometimes, and sometimes it wasnt. So hopefully that will be the fix. Seems that way. Thanks for all the help from everyone on this post. Just wanted to let you know what i found out.

Cool. It's always good when it's something easy. Frutrating, though, when you find out that all that time it was something easy.

Having the crankcase breathers unhooked won't hurt anything, but it's weird they wouldn't hook 'em up.

Its not weird for this place to not hook stuff up. I am not going to them ever again. I took the bike there 3 times this summer. Every time i got it back, something else was messed up. Also missing bolts, stuff not put back together right. Yada yada. Horrible service. Plus they take forever.. I just ordered the parts i need. Hopefully that was all it really is. I rode it for a bout 5 min and it seemed fine. We'll see. I think they have a lack of respect for older bikes...

You would be surprised ( or in your case, guess not ) how sloppy so called professional mechanics can be.
I always do my own work on all my vehicles and it just kills me to take anything in.
Good job on finding your own problem. You would have had to pay someone to look over a bike as old as this one and perhaps they have no more experience( with this bike) than you do. I guess that's one reason why we all subscribe to this forum.
