Ok so after watching a few videos the drum obviously has to be in a certain place with each rotation it is sliding the folks left and right so that which ever gear is engaged mimics the position of the shift drum, so I think maybe I will try to put the shift drum to the neutral position and see how I get on with that 🫠

There’s only ONE arrangement that fits and works. Don’t skip past this step.

Does anyone know the correct way to assemble the gear shift forks on to the gear shaft I made sure that the two outside forks sat in the grooves where the manaul indicates but then that means the middle fork doesn’t sit in a groove??

Please post link to manual you're using. Manual I have for '87 shows 3 forks. Also post photos of your actual gearbox and how forks line up. I've found placing little pieces of wood between engine-case halves help hold them apart at proper distance while I get forks lined up.

Note important part about lining up holes between shaft and centre fork. Then locking them together with bolt and lock-washer. EVERYTHING is keyed to centre fork and it MUST be positioned properly on shaft.

Also did you take any photos of these forks when you pulled engine apart? For either engine? Do you still have one unmolested one to use as good example?

You want to put centre fork on input shaft. You'll notice that's only way to get little tabs on backside of forks to fall into shift-drum channels.

Videos of how it all works:

Hey Danny thanks mate, so my shift forks are all on and haven’t been tampered with my issue was it wasn’t selecting 5,6 , I had a few trial runs with the old engine and now I’ve got that selecting all gears so I’m just about to split the good one all the top I’ve just removed so I’ll take a look at it now when I open it

The thing is I put it back with the forks in the same positions but that middle fork is what selects 5,6 so the issue is maybe that wasn’t seated in the grove correctly on the gear shift shaft because one you wouldn’t be able to close the casings if they was in the wrong position and two 1-4 engages so it is an error with that middle one either it didn’t sit right on the fork end or on the back end but I know what the issue is and what to look for now so I just have to close it check they all engage then I’ll do the gasket and everything should work 🤞
