Changing the petcock
1. Take off your small side farings and seat. Take off the tank, you can unhook the gas line anywhere you want, basically. Make sure the tank is empty, HAHA.
2. take the black plastic **** off of the old petcock with a phillips.
3. Get a crescent (17? 19? Can't remember) and take the old one off. Lefty Loosey. Make sure the plastic filter comes out too.
4. While it's out, you might want to clean your gas tank for good measure.
5. Put the new one in. If it came with a new plastic filter, good.
6. Put it all back together the way you took it apart.
Piece of cake!

Are you able to remove the petcock with the tank on the bike still? I took mine off when my tank was off, and have a new one going on the new tank....soooo, I've just never tried with the tank still on.
I can't visualize it, but i can't imagine a reason why not to take the tank off, you know? I bet if you had an offset wrench or something you could, but it's just so easy to take off the tank.
