Default Changing my fuel petcock

My bike was leaking gas last summer and at first I was just turning off the fuel petcock and it was curing the problem. Well after awhile it started leaking a little bit and now it leaks out a good amount but not right away, probably 6 hours later or sometime over-night. I could see dripping coming from the fuel petcock and just purchased a slightly used one.

With that said, would I be better off just running the bike until it completely runs out of gas to change it or just change it with the bit of gas in there. Also is there any other tips or things I should know/do before I begin this tomorrow? Thanks!

You can drain the tank into a gas can, don't try to remove the petcock with any fuel in the tank... If you do, you'll be covered in gas!

Aside from that it's quite straightforward, make sure you don't lose the filter inside the tank.

Yep. Used to keep debris in the tank from getting to the carbs. It is removable.

Well i should most likely get one of these after i clean my carbs soon. Is there any special filter or can i just go to a motorcycle store and buy one?
Do you have a picture of it? And lastly where the hell would it go?

You have to pull the petcock out of the tank. The filter goes over the long tube. If your petcock doesn't have one, your best bet would be to use an inline fuel filter. Cheaper and easier to install than pulling the petcock, etc.

Here's a link to a new one from ronayers: http://www.ronayers.com/Search/N/687...-000/Source/HO

Sooo I thought it was my fuel petcock, but I should've checked the bike out before I bought the part off ebay for like $40. The tube going out from it has a huge slit in it...Is there any special name for this tube?

I can't tell if that is the fuel line that runs to the carbs or the vacuum line that runs to the cylinder 1 vacuum port. Either way, pull it off the petcock and take it to Autozone or other autoparts store. They usually sell that line by the foot.

It's covering the biggest hole in the petcock going to the carbs, but thanks again, I will have to get it tomorrow.
