another charging problem!
i just a brand new battery three days ago installed it. bike ran prefectly fine for 3 days... let it sit for a day and cant start it. i put my trickle charger on it and it told me to check the battery that it might be bad. it wont even charge it. any ideas? should i just go ahead and buy a stator and rectifier or what? trying to fix this problem asap... any help or ideas would be greatly appreciate...thanks

RE: another charging problem!
it could be the alternator on the bike, i have a 89 cane and the alternator went bad and killed the battery and wouldent charge. but if u can getit started check if its charging, should be charging at13.00-14.00 volts atidle, thin go from there and check the voltage regulator and fuses

If you do a search on this forum you will find a hundred posts on this subject. The rectifier/regulator on these bikes are CRAP. Buy yourself an inexpensive multimeter and start checking voltages at the R/R and stator connections under the gas tank. Good luck.

thanks for replys... i got my battery replaced and got a multimter. i already did the battery leak test that was on the clymers manual for the bike... and the batteryleak test check out good. so its gotta be the r/r or the stator. any of you guys know how much these parts will cost me new or used just need to get this bike on the road...thanks

RE: another charging problem!
You should get 10vac - 60vac coming from the stator, with the bike running and in the low to mid rpm range. If you don't get anything then the stator is probably bad. It seems that the R/R usually go bad. Make sure to check the connectors under the gas tank. They get loose, corroded, etc. Either way if you replace the stator or R/R then you will be disconnecting those connectors anyway. If your stator voltage is good , then reconnect it( 3 pin) and disconnect the R/R from the battery( 4 pin )and check voltage there( again with bike running). You should get 13vdc - 16vdc. If you get nothing then the R/R is bad. If the R/R is bad then I would recommend this one...

I paid $98.00 plus shipping for mine and the guy threw in new connectors as well. I would definitely say don't buy anything used just because you never know if the part is any good until you install. Most places will only exchange used parts if they are bad, if they have another. I did this twice with a used R/R from a motorcycle junk yard before I found a new one. My fault ... I was being cheap!
A new stator might be around $150 - $200 if that is your problem
