so i've decided to change the clutch myself. i'm down the the staked bolt on the shaft that holds the basket on. i've unstaked it and have been trying to loosen it with no luck. i've used an extended breaker bar and still nothing. i have two manuals and none of them say anything about it being reverse thread - does anyone know if it is or not? i'm using the method of having it in top gear an hold the rear brake while attempting to remove the nut.

use a breaker bar and an metal pipe to slip over it, that should give you enough leverage.

 

impact wrench, and wear gloves holding the basket.

 

i have a breaker bar, one of the kind that slide to make it even longer. i've tried it regular and slid out - no luck. i'm thinking it the original clutch in there so this nut's been on since '87.

haven't tried an impact wrench as i don't have access to one. i'm loading it up tomorrow and taking it to my local shop and let them have a go at it.

impact wrench is probably the best bet.
for installing it, one trick to keep the gears from spinning, is use an old copper penny between the gear teeth while you torque the nut.
find an old 70's or older penny because they are actualy copper and will deform instead of tear up the gears.

 

ok, a friend brought over an impact wrench and it came right off with no struggle at all - amazing considering how hard i was pulling on that breaker bar. i was able to get it torque'd by just holding the rear brake while it was in top gear. thanks for the advice! cheers, chris
