i'v nearly 4k miles on my bird now, and its growing on me,,,

it's been a challenge to change from the "F"
i'm having to ride in a completely different manner,, but feels similar, sounds irish that.

think it;s the change from carb to Fi.

and i can put the bird right down to the edge of the tyre, where there was always a tyre size issue with the ;99"F" and there was always a chicken strip.
it wasn;t from fear either,, had it down to the front going light and almost sliding.

I dunno Ken, I've never had a problem using all the tyre (180)on my 90 1000F - what scared me was when the exhaust shrouds scraped before the "hero blobs" under the pegs.
I hope you didn't mean the FRONT - OMG !! No way can you get that to the edge.......

mine run a 190 ,,, according to honda uk.
tyre shop said you could run a 180 or 190,
but said he'd owned a 97 like mine and had tried both, and still swayed me to the 190.

he did say i'd be scrapping tyres with tons of beef on them.

never tried the 180 on the "F" myself.

The standard tyre on a 1000F is a 170 - 190 will make turning the bike quite a bit more difficult............ May explain the problems you had...............

190 is too wide for a 5.5" wheel. I tried a 190 on my XX because I needed a tire on short notice very late in the season and I found one locally cheap. I hated it. Didn't want to turn, and never felt planted when leaned over.

Manufacturers recommend tyre sizes for a reason. When you start playing around with tyre sizes etc it throws out the handling characteristics and what Mr Honda achieved in that area. I have had my XX for ten years since new and have ALWAYS used the recommended sizes of 120/70/17 and 180/55/17. IMO stick with manufacturers specs.

Although I did love the F for its grunt and comfort the bird suits me better.
I wish I had the funds and the time to ride both but life is a collection of choices...some good some bad.
Ask me in a year which this choice was.
I'll hold you to that Gareth!!!

Stevo, I so bloody miss you mate.

If I get another bike it's gonna be a two stroker. I miss that smell.

I dont have a chicken strip at all on my 94. I run the stock 170 rear tire and she handles great. Seems to handle better than my 88 cane. The linked brake system took some getting use to but overall I like it and it stops a lot better than my 88 cane. After getting use to the linked brake system I can push her pretty hard in the corners. Some say the linked brake system has a tendency to make the bike stand up in the corners, I dont see that problem. I just lean her over a bit more and she is very stable.

It's an interesting topic for discussion most times. Some folks like them
some do not.
