Towing a trailer with your fireblade?
I've been brainstorming about some upcoming trips on my bike with a coworker and was thinking about carrying our gear. Has anyone had any experience towing a small (3x5) trailer with a sportbike? I know my 06 1000rr has plenty of power to tow a light trailer (<300 lbs loaded), especially since I'm a small guy, 5'5" & 130lbs. Before calling me insane, I'd like to hear any input from people who have tried it. Afterall, guys on their asthmatic Harley's pull trailers all the time right? I have not been able to find a commercially available hitch for my bike, but I do have access to lathes & mills at work and I do have an idea in my head for making my own utilizing 2 bearings tapered roller bearings supporting a center shaft with the hitch ball mounted to the center shaft, allowing the bike to lean in turns while the hitch is attached. I have not worked out the best way to mount the hitch to the bike yet, however.
How much stuff do you need to haul on these trips? I've never heard of anyone attaching a trailer to a sport bike. If it were me I'd be looking at a large tank bag and some rear panniers. I could be gone a month with what I could carry in those.
For a couple of years, I've had an idea about a sportbike trailer that would be on a rigidly mounted hitch to the rear suspension arm. It would have one thin wheel, and would carry the weight kind of low.
