Spark Knock??
Hi,
Just purchased an 06 CBR 1000 and am trying to take it easy during the break in but i have noticed some "pinging" at low rpm during
acceleration. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I think it might be spark knock due to dealer not putting in premium gas but not really sure. I thought i would give it some time and see if i still noticed this after running premium as recommended by the factory.

RE: Spark Knock??
There are acouple of things that cause that low rpm, high load ping,
One is that you are under revving the engine for the conditions, causing very high loads, and thus, the ping
Two, the mapping of the bike is super lean at several positions, and that cause the engine to starve for fuel, which causes the pre-ignition.
The solution for this? Run the bike at slightly higher RPMs, and lower gears, to minimize the actual load on the engine, and to fit a PC3USB.
Good luck!

Yep, I have the same problem with PING at low RPM on acceleration. I thought it was the gas to but no dice. I am thought perhaps the timing was adjusted to perfrom better at a higher RPM and for that you suffered some at a lower RPM. But being all electronic I belive it would adjust on the fly but I could be wrong.

RE: Spark Knock??
just FYI. that pinging noise that each of you hear is the heat shields expanding and shrinking. only reason you do not hear it at hight RPMS is its too darn loud to hear such a quiet ping. its just like a new ford or honda truck/car. there is a ping as the engine heats up/cools down.
hope that helps.

RE: Spark Knock??
LOL..
It's definetly not the heat shield expanding and shrinking thats making the noise. It's same as a car with to low of octane gas going up a hill under heavy load at low RPM's its that noise.
I thought of somthing after I did my last post and that would be to run regular for a tank see if its worse, then a tank of premium with some octane boost. So basically from one extreme to the other and see if it makes more or less ping and then go from there.... Who wants to be the tester of this? LOL
