Don't know if I would call it spark knock under 3000.

I know my bike is pure stock 04 but these things are geared so high that it definately lugs the engine until 25000rpm. Then it just wants to go.

You are using premium unleaded right?

Oh yes, lots of people have it. Mine pings like crazyup to about4500 RPMwhen I open the throttle past ~30%. Many people think it's valvetrain or other mechanical noise, but I'm pretty sure it's detonation. For some reason the concept of vacuum advance has totally escaped Honda's engineers as the CBR's ECU doesn't pull back the ignition advancewhen thethrottle is opened. This fact combined with the type of noise I'm hearing andwhen I hear it, point strongly to detonation as the cause.

I'm building a custom ignitiontiming controller, which I hope to get installed and tested within the next week or two. If pulling back the timing eliminates the noise, I'll know beyond a reasonable doubt what is happening inside my engine...

Thanks for the reply. I've never ridden a 1000 before this one so I didn't know if it was common or not. Other than that I love the bike.

I may end up going that route, but before I shell out $300 for the Power Commander module I want to verify that retarding the timing can stop the detonation without completely killing low end performance or causing excessive exhaust gas temps. If I can't find a satisfactory compromise, I'll just live with the factory timing and save the $$$ I would have wasted on the PC ignition module. For the cost of a few specialty IGBT's and misc. components I can make a test module for less than 1/10th the cost of the PC unit.
