Total BS. . .don't trade it for a 600. As long as you take the time to get use to it and what it can do, you'll be fine. Like my fellow posters have already said, sign up for the very first safety course. Even though it has little to do with the power the 1K has, it will help you prepar for what you may encouter.

If you have confidence and common sense you can learn on a 1000, I started out on my bosses 996R and rode several liter bikes from there, the first 600 I ever rode lasted 4 months and 5000 miles before i went back to a liter bike. Just know and ride to YOUR limitations not the BIKE'S and dont be stupid with what ever you decide to ride. And wear your gear. All of it.

i am new to this site but been riding for a while. I own both 2004 600rr and 2007 repsol. I would recommend anyone to start on a 600 but you cant pass up a gift. Just be safe not stupid. obvious difference is power.

Congrats on the bike.Take the msf class, my wife did and got a lot out of it.
A good book is Proficient Motocycling by David L. Hough.
You allso might think about geting a 20yr old 750cc for about a grand to learn
the game. Ride it for 6-8 mos then get on your new one.
It will hurt less to drop a old bike vs your new one.
I have the cbr1000 allso.I think the cbr is one of the best bikes on the planet.
Your bike will go 0to 150mph in under 11secs so be carefull.
Have fun, And take your time.
