Had the same problem. It wasn't that the heat shield was misplaced or any thing else like that. The problem was a faulty sensor that told the fan when to turn on and off. The stealorship, after much pissing and moaning, replaced the sensor and the fan, because they "counldn'ttest it properly". They also had to replace my seat cause one of the idots doing the work spilled some oil on it and discolored it. After it was all said and done,sensor, fan, seat, and lower plastics were replaced at no cost to me.
Now my fan kicks on at about 220-225 and off at 210 when at idle. Dont let them BS you into paying for this. Honda knows its a problem and WILL take care of you. Good Luck

Before and after pic's of heat tape. It took no time at all to do since I was doing my first oil change and had the fairings off already. You can't see that the tape was added once the fairings are replaced. I didn't have a problem since my bike was brand-new. I just didn't want any problems and it was an easy fix.

I purchased a brand new '06 1000RR this past April and I haven't seen any issues with any of the fairings melting. But ever since I have gotten back from my trip to the Dragon at Deals Gap I have noticed discoloring of the plastic on the tail section behind the rear seat. Anyone else ever heard of this issue? Any ideas how to fix it?

Fan should come on @ 220.
Fyi: If you have factory blinkers it would save you time to do oil change/heat tape/lights/flasher relay all at once.

DID YOU TAKE THEM OFF AT ALL ? IF YOU DID THERE IS A CLIP IN THE MIDDLE THEY MNT TO AND THAT MNTS TO THEMOTOR IF YOU OVER TIGHTEN IT BENDING IS POSSILBE WHEN I CRASHED MINE IT BENT IT SO SLIGHTLY BUT THE TOLERANCE IS SO TIGHT THERE IS NO ROOM FOR MISTAKE. THE HONDA PART # IS64541-MEL-D30 RIGHT SIDE , 64542-MEL-D20 LEFT SIDE
