The bike is just like a car.... Everyone elevation isn't the same. So the ecu corrects air/fuel for that and about 10 other things. But the idle kinda gets out of wack sometimes.
Plus the maker of the motor has a spec that the idle should be at, so that the motor has the least amont of stress on it with out burning alot of gas.
Just my 2 cents.

Besides, the stunters that do the no handed slow wheelies, need like 5000rpm+ on idle to keep the bike going without touching the throttle
I can't remember exactly (its in the bike manual) but I believe the Honda recommended idle on the 1000RR is 1200rpm +/- 100.
