Squid is not that derogatory to me. If I call someone a squid they usually laugh or I laugh with them. I wear the full get up during the winter because I feel safe and its cold so it helps keep me warm. But during the summer, I wear ahelmet always not only from a protection point of view but how the hell do the guys who only wear sunglasses even see without their eyes watering up. Gloves always and yes I have the hand tan going, it just feels better with gloves. Jeans because it keeps my leg hairs from going up in flames and I can't wear shorts to work. Sometimes over the ankle boots sometimes below the ankle shoes, but never tennis shoes or sandles that does not feel good on the toes or foot.

There is no way I can wear a jacket in 99 degree heat. Its hot way to hot, it might be fine for just going down the road, but ride with some time and you not only sweat to death you get dehydrated fast. I haven't gotten to the point of wearing shorts but I can understand some people that do. Besides jeans aren't going to protect you any better than shorts, well maybe a little better, but they need to come out with gear you can ride with in the summer. Not just up top but down below as well.

I am thnking about wearing shorts but with the icon leg armour. But might as well wear pants because thats not any cooler. They should also have something that protects the hips and crotch buttocks area and thighs. Besides full leather.

With less gear I ride more safe less agressively. More gear the harder and faster I take a turn or road. You would think with all the idiot cagers that gear no matter what temp or condition would be a good idea but I don't want to walk into a place and people sitting there thinking damn, you need a shower you smelly biker. They need to design a full suit with some kind of air conditioner like the astronauts where.

A squid is an irresponsible motorcyclist. The term is derogatory and common among motorcyclists in North America and is generally associated with a new or reckless motorcyclist seen riding erratically and/or beyond his or her capabilities, often without appropriate riding gear.
The origin of the word is varyingly attributed:
[ul][*]A contraction of:
[ul][*]"Squirrely" and "kid" (possibly taken from California surfing culture), or[*]"Squished" and "kid", or[*]"Squished" and "idiot" [/ul][*]An acronym for:
[ul][*]"Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Ignorant and Dangerous", or[*]"Stupidly Quick, Underdressed and Imminently Dead" [/ul][/ul]

Note: both of these are likely to be backronyms
[ul][*]Derivative of U.S. military culture:
[ul][*]Newly-inducted sailors based in San Diego in the '60s would frequently buy an inexpensive two-stroke motorcyle for transportation while on shore, whether they'd ever ridden before or not. So, there were large numbers of unprotected, inexperienced "marine life" squirting through traffic in a hurry and leaving a trail of black "ink" (smoke) behind them.[*]"Squid" was also a common derogatory term for sailors:
[ul][*]Recent inductees were called "squids" by more senior sailors, and[*]All sailors were called "squids" by Marines [/ul][/ul][*]Based on similarity between the way a "squid" rides and an actual squid swims.
[ul][*]Squids can appear unable to change direction while swimming without first coming to a near complete stop. However, once the squid does stop and change directions, it can very quickly accelerate back to its regular swimming speed. Beginning motorcyclists commonly have trouble negotiating turns, and must slow down to unnecessarily slow speed, while at the same time have a tendency to ride very fast on the straight sections of the road. [/ul][/ul]
Often young, squids are identified by their reckless abandon (speeding, wheelies, stoppies etc.) and by their inappropriate attire (shorts, backwards ball caps, flip flops, wifebeater T-shirt, etc). Such a rider eschews all or most of the protective gear worn by many riders (helmet, gloves, leather jacket, riding pants, and boots) and the social and legal norms of riding behaviour, and as such is looked upon with derision by experienced motorcyclists, who also refer to them as "organ donors", "Zip-Splats", "a Stillie", "Skin Crayons", "Sausage Creatures"[URL=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid_%28motorcycle%29#endnote_]<

Today i was riding up Buckhorn Summit in Redding on my bike on my 1000 and my brother was trying to keep up on his 954 i just sold him. Most of the corners are posted at 20 and we were taking them at 55-60. I actually shaved off part of my left boot because we were leaning so far and my new diablo corsas have no more chicken strip. Riding roads like that there is no way i would wear sandles and shorts. And the new cbr 1000s i found actually burn your right leg through your pants at stop lights if u put ur right leg down on that side. The 954 fairing covered the engine there. Today it was also about 100 degrees in Redding California ( it gets up to 120 here in a month Look it up) and the new tour master mesh jacket i was wearing didnt get hot at all. After finally getting a mesh jacket i can say I'm never riding without gear again.

+1 ^^^^ I think we as riders have so much to worry about as it is with people not paying attention in there cars and other traffic issues to be concerned with what the next guy is wearing or doing. Do what makes you comfy at the end of the day its all about you you wanna wheelie down the highway going 120 go for it i'll see you at our final destination. Motorcycling is an individual sport thats my .02

Squirrely Kid = SQUID.

I'm just going to post the whole Wiki article to clear this up once and for all:

There.

Ooops. I just realized Tyson did the same a few posts up. You can read his quote as well.

If someone is "proud" of being a squid they either a) have a deathwish and don't care how dangerous they are to themselves and others or b) don't really understand the meaning of a Squid.

The whole issue with riding gear is another thing entirely, yet it does feed into the definition. I think when you get to the point that you're above 30, have a good job and good income, have a young family with a wife and kids, you start to care more about enjoying your hobbyin a safer and smarter manner. I'm not going out on the highway with just shorts and sandals for the same reason I'm not going to mainline heroin, it may feel good but it's just too dangerous.
