Default 08 shifter

on my 08 1000rr i have noticed that the shaft (maybe called counter shaft not sure) that goes from the shifter linkage to the inside of the the transmisson has about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch horizontal play in it. when it is pulled fully outward i can engage all the gears and everything is normal, however i can also push the shaft inwards toward the center of the bike and this disengagesthe shifter and i can't get any gears. does anyone know if the is some kind of built in feature or do i maybe have some type of inner retainer ring that maybe broke allowing the shaft to slide. (it does not slide on it's own, i have to push and pull on it to make it move). does anyone else's 08 do this?
thanks

Not on mine. Just checked it, and no play. Measurement from case to end of shaft from top was 1 9/16".
