Default Windscreen mod.

I've thought about a different windscreen for some time now. The stock screen puts turbulent air right at shoulder level. I saw a few that looked good, but nothing I thought would be for me. Besides, I really like how the original looks and wanted to keep it. Sooooo - a piece of plexiglass, a heat gun and a few hours work gave me the result pictured below.

My intent was to just to see what it would look like, and find out if it did make a difference. I like the way it looks, and it works like a charm. At cruising speeds it takes most of the wind off my chest and directs turbulent air over my helmet. Starting about 80 it's almost like riding behind the Windjammer on my old CB650.

There is about a quarter inch gap between the modded screen and the original. I taped it over to see if that made a difference. That caused severe helmet buffeting at 85 - 90 mpg, so the tape came off. With the tape off it will run into the low triple digits with no felt turbulence, although the bike did move around more than with the stock screen. It was rock steady up to 120 mph though and I seldom ride even that fast, so no real problem.

Guess I'll keep this one.

You made a laminar lip, or airfoil, that flows the air over your helmet. Good idea, and nice craftsmanship.

Nice job! Looks a bit like the MRA? Vario touring lip thingo...bet yours was cheaper..

I put a windlip replacement screen on mine. Looks great but still too much turbulence right in the forehead. Mind you, I've still got my old screen....hmmm, a heat gun you say..Could you put up any tips you worked out for the rest of us please? Is it only the lip at the top that you heat gunned and when you take it off does the whole thing stay curved so not pulling on the screws the whole time?

The entire piece is curved so there is no strain on the fairing. I can work up a set of directions, and some pictures to go with them. It'll take me a couple days.

Not bad at all, DRam!! Looks much better than I would have guessed. Hell of a job, man!

My dad and I put a new windshield in his boat the same way.... with a big piece of plexi and a heat gun. Worked great!

Dram, excellent job! The "How To" would be great but I'm not too sure I could duplicate your craftsmanship. Would be a great addition to the old girl for us taller guys.

Better make that a couple weeks. Life keeps getting in the way of making it to the workshop. I'll get there though.
