Stutter on acceleration
Smoke? What color smoke? White smoke is usually antifreeze getting into the cylinder- blown head gasket. Blue smoke is usually oil getting in by valve guides or rings. Black smoke is usually extreme richness- loose or too big main jets or, one or more sticky piston/needles causing jet needles to stay out of the main jet. That really boggs down acceleration. But another thing that can cause a bike to bogg down is the ignition not advancing. (Am I the only one who still has a timing light?)
Several decades ago, a motorcycle magazine said to change the main jets on my old GS1000 from a 95 to 115 and to take off the lid on the airbox. Magazines were like the internet 25 years ago. Well, I did that. The bike ran like crap and my mileage went from 45 mpg down to 38. The problem was that the magazine was at sea level. All my riding is over a mile high, and I changed it back to 95 which is the perfect jet for my altitude. I did keep the lid off the airbox though.

Sprock your a genius, the mid harness connetor is shot!!!
Here is a pic of the damage

Poke, it was blue smoke, but it seems that the seafoam soak helped. Because the smoke is gone now. And no I still own a timing light too.
So how should I replace the harness? buy a connector with the same # of wires and plug and play? or find one at a junkyard or fleabay?
Thanks for all the help ya'll!!

Well done on sourcing the problem. Personally I'd find a matching plug since it is held in place by the bracket.
Well done to Sprock as well for the suggestion.
Cheers, SB
If you can't source one just make one up with spade connectors - it's never visible anyway.
I hope you are planning on a new RR and battery to round the whole deal off - you should
or you run the risk of blowing field coils in the stator
Hey this is the best news

Ok, I finally got the wires repaired with blade connectors. I had high hopes the problem would be resolved, but its not. Next is the reg/rect. Ill do a swap on that and get a new batt and go frome there. BTW the smoking is gone.
