Stock Exhaust Cans (& slip-ons!) - CBRF 1990
Hi all... my '90 CBRF has some scratches on the exhaust cans each side which were made when the previous owner says he tried to back it out of the side shed door (der!).

To me they really detract from the overall look of the bike and I would like to do something about it.
I pulled both cans off last night and started sanding off the paint... this brings me to my first question:
Did any of the CBR's come out with dark grey painted cans like mine above??
From all the photo's I've seen, they're all silver/metal colour...

Which brings me to my second questions:
Are the stock cans painted or are they bear metal?
I don't know an awful lot about metal but if these cans are steel then I'd assume they'd need some kind of finish otherwise they'd be prone to rust.
My sanding efforts are pretty ordinary and it's nearly impossible to get all the paint off, so does anyone have an opinion on sand/bead blasting these systems?
I like the look of bare metal if I can get than sand blasted but if it's not feasable I'll repaint with silver heat proof paint.
Ideally I'd love an after market system, something like Madwaka's would be nice!! But alas money don't grow on trees, especially in aussieland... it's all plastic.
Thanks for any feedback.
Carl

Thanks Ghost1Rider... so I'm assuming your stock cans are bear metal and made of stainless steel?
The paint on my exhausts looks likeit was put on atthe factory as it's done really well, doesn't appear to be a backyard job to hide anything.
I'm thinking I might just paint it with silver heatproof paint and be done with it.
I was considering covering it with a litho printing plate to give it the nice aluminium look but I think it'll be more hassle than it's worth.
Starting tolook around at aftermarket pipes (second hand etc...) as the moreI look at CBRF's with them the more I don't like the stock exhaust look!!
I have a questions for the exhaust guru's tho; Does a slip-on can/muffler need to be specific for our models or will any slip-on muffler ratedfor a1000cc do the job? I know the local sports exhaust specialist so bending upa customheader pipe(s) would be no issue.
Also looking around at the other threads, the go for a single slip-on is to just block the left hand pipe from the headers and run the slip-on from the right hand 2" outlet... wouldn't this restrictflow and result in less performance than the stock setup? I'm not after horseys or a loud sound... I just like the look of the big cans!!
Ideally I'd like to go dual exhausts as twin pipes make the bike look symetrical. So would I need two can's rated at 1000cc each, or 2 cans rated for a 500cc each?
As you can tell, I don't know a hang of a lot about exhausts!

Hello michnet76, I have a 1990 L-model,Ihad to replace the canslast year andI found a pair at a breakers. They are the same colour as your cans but I was told they were from a later model possibly an M-model, although scratched I dont really worry about the colour, at least they're not holed!
Hello michnet76,
First off, I'm new in this forum.I have a 91 M model. My cans are black. I was searching the net for new ones because the old ones are looking bad. So I found these: http://www.dba.dk/asp/soegning/detai...nceid=48201327This a Danishtrade site for new and used stuff, he wants approx 300$ for them, they are brand new. Not original but from an Italian company called Mivv. They are black and stainless wrapped...
Well, just wanted to share.. BTW, does anyone know where I can find a pair of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1991-...82296463QQrdZ1
Looking forware to use this forum, it looks really nice!

Went to the local auto shop this morning and they didn't have any heat proof silver so brought a can of VHT Flame Proof Matt Aluminium... started spraying one exhaust and wasn't happy with the colour... looked like a very light grey, no metallic pigments, had speckly flaky finish and just looked dodgy... so rubbed it off with metholated spirits... went back down to auto shop and came back home with a can of VHT Black Oxide paint meant for painting m/bike engines and exhausts. Supposedly has a satin black finish - I can live with that. Might dress it up with a strip or two of aluminium litho plate!
Will do till I come across some cheap slip-on cans!

Stock exhaust painted now... more like matt black than satin black, but I don't mind it now... better than the scratched up look before! The black matches the seat and black trim. Will do the job till I come across some cheap slip-on cans

Going back to my previous post... I querried whether a slip on muffler had to be specific for our model or will any can(s) rated for 1000cc do the job, providing a suitable pipe is used to mate the slip on can with the stock header system...
Well looking around I found these on eBay - a pairoforiginalHonda VTR1000 exhausts for $200AUD + $45 freight. That's in my price range... now any opinions on whether they would be suitable for the CBR's engine? As I said above, I have a friend who owns the local performance exhaust shop so bending up the pipes and what not shouldn't be an issue.

FWIW... a Yammy R1 single can for $100 buy-it-now but not offering to post:

There's also another R1 can up for bidding currenty at $75 AUD and willing to post. Looks ok.

Any thoughts on whether they'll work on our CBR 1000cc?

As long as you keep the stock downpipes you should use dual mufflers. Just about any dual muffler from a1000CCbike will do. Depending of if you want more power or prefer silent mufflers, you look for aftermarket muffler (normally loud)or stock types.
Thanks R1000, I thought that would be the case... any muffler rated for same motor oughta do the trick... I like the look of dual cans anyway... makes it look like a bigger bike ;-)
I'll keep an eye on those VTR cans and see what happens - $200AUD seems a good price compared to buying new aftermarket cans (around $1000 AUD)... they'll need a bit of modding to work, need to lob off the stock mounts and make up straps and cut the front pipes off and possibly flange to mount custom pipes on etc...
Thanks again
