Default Starter vs. Starter clutch/damper - sound and vid link here

I have tried to explain a little bit in the video posted on the Tube here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-Nep3EnIis
(or search for cbr100f hurricane starter)

I am the original owner of the Hurricane which has almost 60,000 miles on it. The starter maladies began a year ago. I would stop for gas and when I would go to restart the bike it was like the starter would not “catch”. Sounded more like when your car’s solenoid was not kicking in hard enough to grab the flywheel. The noise is almost like gears not meshing. Not the sound so much of something slipping. If that makes sense. It has grown continuously worse to the point now that it will not spin the motor ever. Well, maybe occasionally it “catches” for a partial revolution. This weekend I am going to try a brand new battery and see if I can find my way to the contacts on the starter motor itself and clean those up. Quite honestly I am not sure I want to go through the starter clutch/damper work even though the bike is like new in many other ways….grrrrr…. The bike is a part of my life… What does everyone think? I think I need to re-read checking the voltage levels…

It doesn't sound like the typical starter damper noise, which is more of a moaning sound (from owner and bike) Like a flat battery....sort of noise.
It could be the starter clutch - if so I have a spare out of my own bike which is in good shape (bought when I thought it was the starter clutch and it was in fact the damper that went.) Cost of postage only.........if you need it.
It could be the chain failing to catch on the crankshaft gears (ouch) in which case you are probably looking at an engine out job. The starter clutch and damper can both be done with the motor in the frame. There are a number of us who have done it - it's a bit fiddly, but even with my xxl hands I managed.
Tell me - can you push start the bike and will it then run ?- if so generally that'll mean starter clutch or damper need work.
The rest of the boys will jump on this I'm sure, but all is not lost - I did mine following the video in our how-to section.
Best of luck.

Hi dont know if this helps but I had aproblem back in January. Went out to the garage to start the old gal and turned the key. Light came on but not to bright, so put the jump pack on and it just started. Put the battery on charge for 12 hours and tried again, same thing but this time all it did was klick. Checked the soleniod and it was shot. Got a new 1 and charged the battery again. Still no good, checked the batttery a few hours later and it was only holding 3volts. The soleniod must have fried the battery got a new battery and bulls eye, away she went, almost fist piston over the top. Must admit I was getting very concerned for a while.
What I'm saying is, check the soleniod and battery before you go replacing the clutch. The manuel does tell you how to test itand it saved me a lot of expenseand time .Good luck with yours hope she's fixed soon

You guys are the best! I swear I will pay all this help back/forward down the road. OK. New, fully charged battery went in last night. No difference really. Bumped motor over a bit with bike in gear to see if starter would "catch" and no changes there. Will clean up the connections to the starter motor itself next. And YES, need to have a look at that oil. Great idea. Put it in my pan and drag a magnet around in it. Tonight though I have a date with a little hottie I met online. Imagine that. Will let you all know a bit later how things are going...with the bike! Not the hottie...Sincere thanks to you all.
PS..Bike runs "perfectly" with a push start. That is part of what sucks so bad. It has less than 1,000 miles on rebuilt carbs, near-new tires/chain/sprockets/brake pads and updated suspension way back with Progressives in the front forks, and an Ohlins with remote reservoir on back...almost a shame to part her out.

Starter clutch is on the back of the stator - not as bad as the starter damper, though.
As said above I have a good one you can have for the price of postage.

well with all the jiggling about and toing and froing of my alternator shaft i fffear this is the cause of the bikes latest demise.

did about 75 miles over a couple of days with many restarts without problems. i then went to work at the local hospital and as i got there i heard an awful grinding noise from the engine area and it stopped and would not even turn over.

got home and stripped it down again and the alternator shaft has snapped clean at the point directly behind the stator rotor.

not sure if anything else is causing this problem so i have decided on a replacement engine with a warranty. but the alternator damper repair that i did worked well.

good luck to the owner of the black/silver hurricane i hope your issues get sorted.

Shadow, thank you so much for the offer. Will let you know what I find. The weekend is finally here in Minneapolis, MN USA...Have had a run of cold, wet weather. Will be taking the Blackbird out for some riding. But will also try to find some time for some Hurricane diagnostics. Appreciate everyone's help, suggestions and support. You are the best.

Default video link?

OK. Been a month since last I posted. I have decided I will hang on to the Hurricane but I am not going to to the work myself. Just don't have the time or the desire these days. Would rather be out riding on the BlackBird while someone else fixes the Hurricane. I would however like to see the video that a couple of you talk about. I would give it to my mechanic so that he does not end up doing more work than he has to.

Also, while the bike is with him, I am thinking I would have him retrofit the cam chain tensioner. I once heard that Honda sold one single part number as the cure for the CCT noise. Does anyone know if this is true? And, is this cure still available? Thanks again all!

here is where you will find the video of the alternator damper problem.

your problem sounds very different in my opinion. this was the problem with my bike which sadly necessitated me getting a replacement engine.

glad to say tho that my bike is now running again and I have done 140 miles without problems and as the engine was from a 99 bike (mine is a 90) it is a lot smoother and seems to have more power. has a bit of an oil leak from somewhere but i can live with it for now.

hope you get your problems sorted mate.
