Default starting issues 2

i have already posted on here regarding my starting problems on my 1990 hurricane.

i have tested all voltages and all are ok apart from the starter solenoid which shows 12v which drops to 0.01v when i hit the starter.

is my starter solenoid dead or is it as i suspect the damper clutch. even with a car battery and the bike battery together the bike only just starts on the motor leading me to believe that it is not the alternator damper but it is the bike dumping voltage somewhere when i hit the starter.

your thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd check the solenoid - sure I saw one on e-Bay UK very recently - new old stock.

Got a vid ya can post of how she sounds when you are trying to start her ??

If it's the starter clutch damper it should be fairly apparent.

Kinda like this wheezing sound !

yea mine sounds exactly the same as the one in the vid. i just want to eliminate other causes before i have to do this big job.

hope it is the starter solenoid. probably wouldnt hurt to get a new one anyways considering the bikes age. it starts no problem when pushed, just that it wont go on the starter. it sounds like an asthmatic labrador.

There are at least 5 of us that have done this job ourselves, with the help of the video - if we can do it, so can you Reaper - It's not that bad.........I'll be happy to talk you through it as you go, if the video still leaves you with questions.
Good luck with it !

did you guys completely replace the alternator damper or did you just rearrange the platest inside it.

i think just re-arranging the plates is only a temp fix and given the amount of work involved just taking fairing, carbs, airbox off etc i would rather replace the whole thing if it is only gonna last me a few months.
thanks

I replaced some of the plates with some spare secondhand ones from my mate Andy in Scotland. I also added another cupped spring, which has worked well to date.
If you have the cash, buy a new one - you can't test secondhand ones without fitting them - you don't have the power by hand.

You can clean everything up and add another flat washer under the top cupped washer/s to give it more tension.

The job itself looks daunting, but it isn't that bad, really.

temp today was 8 degrees c in sheffield and the bike did start on the starter from cold so i though it was temperature related, ie cold weather slowing down electrics. but then the bike was up to normal operating temp after a 20 mile run home to doncaster it wouldn't start on the starter.

me thinks the alternator damper is the culprit. ****.
n mind eh. ill have to follow the procedure that stu.co.nz describes i think
