Anyone know a trick to getting the starter reduction gear out without pulling the engine?

I figure if I can get the alternator shaft out then I can get the gear out. Not sure if just the reduction gear is bad or if the shaft just needs replaced...couldn't get just the starter reduction gear shaft out either. The gear seems to have way too much play from side to side so I'm pretty sure it's the cause of the rattling I'm hearing.
